Mountain Unity International CIC has been set up to promote economic development activities for the benefit of the communities living in the Hindu Kush and Pamir Knot mountains. The project has a particular focus to support the people living in the Wakhan Corridor in north east Afghanistan. The local people are a combination of subsistence farmers and nomadic herders who suffer desperate levels of maternal and infant mortality exacerbated by extreme poverty. Initially our work will focus on increasing the number of trekking and mountaineering expeditions which provide the local people with the opportunity to provide services such as portering, guiding, cooking, renting pack animals etc. As the number of visitors, and subsequently our level of income increases we will work with the local people to improve local capacity and economic opportunities. This will include support to small businesses and facilitating training in management, language and other pertinent skills. We would like to see things really improve in at least one corner of Afghanistan. As a very small organisation we can make a little money go a long way.
