PORTERS - Oxus, Mountains for Peace - was a project organised by
Mountain Wilderness, an international organisation dedicated to
preserving the world's mountain wildernesses and supporting
environmentally sustainable tourism.

Following on from this project they have began a programme to train a
number of Afghans to become mountain guides and porters.

Porters

They cost aproximatley $10 a day, (500 afghans). There has currently
been no issues with the porters for example, refusing to move forward
unless the price is increased.

The porters carry a maximum of 22kg of expedition equipment and
3kg of their own personal equipment.

We would strongly recommend that you hire a guide. They will insure
you pay the right prices and will resolve any issues the porters have.
The local language is Dari and with little English spoken
it can make the whole experience run much more smoothly.

Although training was started, most porters are local farmers and
won't know how to put up tents. Feedback from trekkers and
mountaineers have said that they are generally quick to learn as long
as you are willing to spend a short amount of time showing them what
you require.
